Oh wow cool! If we have an older version do we need to buy Studiometry 12 before using cloud?

Hi Dana. You don't need to upgrade or even own any version of Studiometry. Studiometry Cloud is a subscription-based service that acts as your license(s) for all of your machines and devices. No need to buy anything else!

How is the cloud data secured?

Thanks for the reply. I am looking for a more detailed response for what type of security you are using. Just saying it's secure and not detailing the type of security / encryption / service used is no enough to make me comfortable about storing sensitive business information in your cloud.

Nope, the data is stored locally in Studiometry on your machines and devices. If you don't have an Internet connection, you can access and edit your local data, and any changes you've made will sync with the cloud the next time you connect.

However, each account has the option to require an active connection for viewing and editing data. This setting can be toggled in the Studiometry Cloud account section.

I have to echo Luther Core's concern regarding the need for more transparency regarding the actual encryption standards that is being used to secure the "cloud data"

The link at http://oranged.net/studiometrycloud/security/ only mentions the use of HTTPS/TLS for encrypting the *transmission* of data to and from the Studiometry Cloud service. This is kind of like a restaurant saying that all of their cooks wash their hands thoroughly before returning to work after they take a bathroom break. It should go without saying!

It's assumed at this point that any critical web service uses HTTPS/TLS for encrypting traffic to and from the service. But this says nothing about how the data is secured, once it's sitting on the Studiometry Cloud server. Secure transport and firewalls are great and all, but it doesn't matter if the worlds strongest armored car delivers a crate of gold to your house, and your front door has 3 military-grade locks on it, if someone figures out how to get into your house by drilling a tunnel under the floor (or even social engineering a support person to simply unlock the front door for you!). 

Considering just how sensitive your Studiometry data is, I think there needs to be more transparency and technical information on how the data is actually secured while it is stored on the Studiometry servers. 

1Password, for example, does an excellent job of explaining how they keep your data secure on their cloud service (they have even published a super technical white paper that goes into deeper detail). As such, I have zero qualms about using their 1Password for Teams cloud service, because they adequately explain how my data is secured.

The idea of Studiometry in the cloud is super exciting to me, but if there is no assurance that my data is actually encrypted while it is stored on their server (or at least reasonable explanations given as to why it may not be practical to encrypt everything in the database) , the added convenience of this service isn't worth the risk of potential server-side compromise of my data.
