Improvement Needed: Linking Clients & Projects to Log Items

Hi Tom,

I'm giving the Logs a test-run, and found that it only seems possible to "search for / narrow down" the list using the actual CLIENT NAME and/or PROJECT NAME (e.g., "Client A", "Project Name A").

It should be able to filter by Project ID or Client ID as well. Why?

1) Intuitive, user-friendly, makes sense.
2) Because a lot of our projects are actually called "Desig Update... ... ... ... ...", and we find things quicker by ID (e.g., "JOB0001"), which are unique.

Hope to see this in the forthcoming update.

  Also, when using the search box that results when a user selects the big + icon in the edit log window that is created when the user creates a new log, the user should be able to search on all three—client, project, contact—at the same time, all the time.  Otherwise the user is forced into starting every project with the clients name so as to be able to use the search tool for those all too human failings when we can't remember which project name out of dozens we want to attach the current log item.

  As is stands now, the user gets stuck in making a binary, non-intutitive search model.  For example, when the user want to link a log to a project, she clicks on Projects...but can't remember the name of the project because there are dozens of project names.  So she naturally would type in the client's name expecting to see that client's project list.  But as it is now, SM's search is limited to projects.

  Same is true for trying to link a log to a contact.  When the user selects the contact icon, SM's search is limited to just contacts, not contacts and clients. 

  Expanding SM's search by 'going lateral' to include more than one search category is one way computers are designed to function to help people by saving micro-time increments out of our workflow.  I understand the design challenge his brings up.  If you don't force the user to make a choice at the start of a search, then how does one list the results?  What (projects?, clients?, contacts?) comes first?  I suggest making a design decision.  Something like clients first, projects second, clients third.

  Closely related and integrated is the role of UI, but as shown in another forum topic...that's a whole other dialog.

  Keep up the good work.  The Oranged team's agile design process, evident by the many micro and macro app updates is refreshing and encouraging.

  I believe Studiometry already does this for creating a new ToDo without a client or project selected (and probably anywhere else you have an "Attach To:" and a "Change" button), you can select Project and type in a client name and it will narrow the list to all projects associated with that client.  It would be nice to have similar functionality when assigning Logs, but add Contact names and their associated clients/projects to the list.
