Backup data ~ bloated!

My Studiometry Backup folder is currently 50.75 GB ~ big! None of the files would appear to be current, the most recent is dated 26/6/2011. This is possibly because I've recently moved the Data Folder from an separate internal HD (which it shared with Time Machine) back to the default folder (Home/Library/Application Support/Studiometry).

I'm doing all this in preparation for using a cloud-based location for the Data Folder. However, the sheer size of my Data Folder (because of the bloated Backup folder) means that copying to Dropbox, or similar, is unfeasible. So the question is, can I delete the old files in Backup without any adverse side effects?

A parallel question is, is there anyway of avoiding the Backup folder becoming so large? Files going back to 2008 are unnecessary (for me). I'd only want 6 months of back ups... a year at most.
